Scale Logic has had a long-term relationship with Red Lab, based in Ontario, Canada. We have been fortunate to be a trusted advisor leading two technology refreshes in the last 15 years.
In mid-2022, Red Lab expressed their desire to enhance their aging SAN, which at the time was powered by Scale Logic’s HyperFS filesystem and RX fibre storage. They sought to migrate their SAN to the Scale Logic ZX NAS as a natural progression from SAN to NAS. While our ZX NAS would have fulfilled their current facility requirements, we believed it was in Red Lab’s best interest to invest slightly more in VAST Data—a future-proof technology capable of meeting their post-production and VFX workflow needs while scaling in both performance and compute as their requirements grew
Initially, Red Lab found this solution to be superior but beyond their budget. However, the discussion around data similarity piqued their interest, prompting us to probe their data set. We discovered a 2:1 data similarity reduction, enabling us to reduce the platform size and design a solution more aligned with their budget. Importantly, this solution ensures their scalability for over ten years as they grow.
Scale Logic and VAST faced competition from various rivals, including Quantum, Open Drives, EMC, Qumulo, and other open ZFS platforms. Nevertheless, VAST’s all-flash technology, offering zero downtime, a ten-year warranty, scalability, data similarity capabilities, and comprehensive white glove support, provided Red Lab’s facility with superior long-term value compared to its competitors.
